While ICF walls themselves don't absorb water like wood, below-grade sections still need waterproofing to prevent moisture intrusion into the living space. Tremco waterproofing products, available through Professional Building Supply, provide reliable protection.
Nudura Waterproofing Membrane (TREMdri 540)
The primary below-grade waterproofing solution for ICF walls. This spray-applied membrane creates a seamless, flexible barrier that:
- Bonds directly to ICF foam
- Bridges small cracks and imperfections
- Remains flexible at low temperatures
- Resists hydrostatic pressure
Membrane Primer
Applied before the membrane to ensure proper adhesion. Essential for optimal performance, especially in dusty or challenging conditions.
Application Process
- Clean ICF surface of dirt and debris
- Apply primer and allow to dry
- Spray membrane to specified thickness
- Allow curing before backfill
- Install drainage board if required
Why Waterproofing Matters
Even though concrete doesn't rot like wood, moisture intrusion can still cause problems:
- Mold growth on interior finishes
- Efflorescence (white mineral deposits)
- Humidity issues in finished basements
- Potential structural issues from freeze-thaw cycles
Proper waterproofing prevents these issues and is required by code for habitable below-grade spaces.
